Yes, This is a Student Issue

Over the last few weeks, students throughout the country have started mobilizing in support of the people who take care of them when they're away from home. Sodexo workers across university campuses are gaining more and more support for all the hard work they do. Students are beginning to take notice that treatment of their food service employees affects the overall environment in the dining hall.

Many of those employees, like Krystal Johnson at Emory University, face issues like taking sick days and "a total lack of respect," as she says.

These kinds of issues are really rallying students to share to their voice, particularly those at the University of Denver.

In a response to previously-published editorial by student body President Antoine Perretta, University of Denver students John McMahon, Roman Valencia, and Dillon Doylein argue in a letter to the student newspaper that students should rally their support for Sodexo employees on campus and express concerns about the food they are served:

"Contrary to what President Perretta claims, students are directly affected by Sodexo workers every single day. Workers don't have access to adequate sick days and cannot afford to take unpaid days off which exposes students to food transmitted illness."

"This is a student issue."

This is just one of the reasons students have begun to take more initiative on campus in attempt to help the working conditions of Sodexo employees. The students believe that the unfair working conditions and poor treatment of Sodexo workers have a direct affect on the DU community as a whole.

As more students begin to take notice that this is not just a student issue on one particular campus, but rather on campuses across the country, the visibility and voice for this campaign will grow in resonance. Soon, Sodexo will have to take notice and work to create a better environment for its employees.
