Khayyam Qidwai, Ohio State Student: It's "One Struggle" For Workers and Students.
Khayyam Qidwai is a graduate student at Ohio State University. He's been working with SEIU and student groups across the country to show students that there's a connection between "what's going on with their food" and issues surrounding workers rights on the job. He says "it's not just about their food, not just about the workers--but it's a combination. That's one struggle."
Khayyam says that in his experiences, the workers really care about the students, and that they view the students as "their own kids" and "take on a parent role."
Khayyam believes that it's almost a given that students should care about the people who are serving food and cleaning the buildings on campus. He asks, "don't they deserve to be treated justly? To able to support their families, support their kids?"
"In school, you always read books about the problems," he says. But the Clean Up Sodexo campaign gives students the opportunity to actually be making a difference. Instead of just discussing problems, students can "make an actual change and see the change before your eyes."
In the end, Khayyam believes that while there's an assumption that students don't have power, students have quite a bit of a voice, "a lot more than we realize. " To him, getting involved in the Clean Up Sodexo is an amazing opportunity for students to demonstrate it.
