Ryan Smith, Clark University Student: "Workers aren't asking for crazy things."

Meet Ryan Smith. He's a graduate student at Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Clark outsourced their food service to Sodexo two years ago, despite "much student outcry," says Ryan. He felt that it was a real disappointment to see them come to campus.

Ryan doesn't believe that campuses are separate from the communities they live in, and that students have a responsibility as consumers to make sure that the companies students are supporting are "supporting fair labor standards."

Ryan says that needs more transparency in the contracts that they have with campuses. On his campus, it took literally three years for them to be able to view the contract.

When they were given access, they were "only allowed to go into a room for an hour at a time, and take notes with no photocopies or pictures." He believes that since the students are paying for it, they should be able to see where their money is going. "It's truly unbelievable. It's like, what are they trying to hide?" he asks.

In the end, Ryan believes that it's okay for a company to make a profit, but that profit "can't come at the expense of human life." He says the "Sodexo workers aren't asking for crazy things."

Ryan believes that there's no better time than now for students to get involved. "Students have the opportunity to stand with the workers and say that 'this is not right, we don't want to support this and we want to do something to change it.'"
