Sandy Dailey, Sodexo Food Service Worker, Ohio State University: "You'd Think if You Show Your Dedication..."

Sandy Dailey is a Sodexo food service worker at OSU. Though she's worked for Sodexo for 9 years, she just got her first small raise last year and she's never had access to affordable health insurance.

On just $9 an hour, Sandy can't afford to pay for medical care out of pocket so she hasn't seen a doctor in 3 years--despite having a serious heart condition.

Sandy has already had two heart attacks at work, and without access to health care she is constantly at risk of having another one. She is supposed to take medicine for her high blood pressure but can't afford it.

Both of Sandy's heart attacks happened after she had to lift boxes of syrup for soda - some as heavy as 60 pounds. The last time she complained of chest pain and declined to lift the boxes, her Sodexo supervisor didn't schedule her to work for a whole week afterwards.

"So I lift the boxes," she says, tears streaming down her face. "I know I shouldn't, but what choice do I have? If I don't do it, I don't get scheduled. And if I don't get scheduled, I can't take care of him," she says, motioning toward her boyfriend Ronald's bedroom. When Sandy's not working, she spends every moment caring for Ronald, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2008.

"It was Thanksgiving," Sandy recalls. "I was in the kitchen washing up and he came in and his face was covered in blood." Ronald had lost his balance and fallen down. Within 3 months, he had lost the ability to walk. He depends on Sandy for everything from visits to the doctor to trips to the bathroom.

To keep her job, Sandy works shifts as long as 12 hours--sometimes with a break and sometimes without. She is exhausted at the end of her day and fears she is putting her health even more at risk.

"This company doesn't care about you at all. You'd think if you show your dedication, work hard for so long...," Sandy trails off, still in tears. "This company doesn't care at all."
