Anton Spencer, Cleveland Laundry Worker: "I have not felt that we have been properly trained..."

I have worked at the Sodexo laundry on Collinwood Yards for about a year and make $8.60 per hour. I work the night shift cleaning the lint and medical waste as I get the plant ready for the morning shift.

One of my nightly tasks involves crawling inside the giant 300 pound dryers, where I manually scrape off the plastic medical waste that melts to the inside of the dryer during the day. The palms of my hands have black marks from scraping the melted plastic Another thing I do most nights is I take a scissor lift to the top of the dryer, where I get off and clean the lint and dust that collects on the top of the dryer. I don't use a harness because I don't know where to attach the harness. The management should provide me training about what I should do, but they haven't. I'm afraid if I had a harness and attached it to the wrong thing I could be injured in a fall. Of course I could be injured if I fell of the washer without a harness.

Only three people clean the massive plant each night. Sometimes there are temporary employees that help clean too, but even then it's hard to get the plant cleaned as well as it could. Workers on the day shift have said when air vents are opened to let air into the hot laundry, dust and lint fall almost like its snowing. I know what I could do to avoid the problem, but there are not enough people working at night to do what needs to be done to avoid the lint showers.

We all would benefit from living wages and safe working conditions in Cleveland. In my time at Sodexo, I have not felt that we have been properly trained or that our safety is important to Sodexo.
