Speaking Out

Avery Bizzell, a student at Morehouse College and participant in Clean Up Sodexo's Summer Brigade, joined with other students, Sodexo workers and community leaders in Atlanta last week to protest the unfair labor practices of Sodexo management. Check out what Avery had to say when he spoke to an energetic crowd at a town hall event in support of Sodexo workers' rights.
Campus food service workers are so much more to us than just people who serve us food--they are also members of our collegiate families and communities. In the classroom, we are taught to think critically about the world every day, and now we have the opportunity to stand against the injustices of Sodexo in our own communities. Will you join us in doing whatever is necessary to achieve justice for Sodexo workers on our campuses?
Terasia Bradford was a freshman at Ohio State University when she found out how Sodexo was mistreating its food service employees who work at the university's stadiums and athletic facilities. Through her involvement with United Students Against Sweatshops and the Clean Up Sodexo campaign, she learned these injustices were not just happening at OSU--they were happening to workers on campuses all across the country. This week, Terasia shares her powerful reasons for joining the campaign in a featured guest blog post and video.
Billy Pippins joined Sodexo over eight months ago as laundry worker in Cleveland. As a production worker, Billy is involved in the process of cleaning hospital pads, and has to meet laundry quotas of up to 700 pads per hour. Watch Billy talk about the demanding pace that can put some workers at risk of injury and cause them to take unsafe actions on the job.
Bessie Turpin is a production worker at Sodexo's Cleveland laundry plant. Working in production, Bessie is responsible for the cleaning of thousands of hospital gowns every day. She often feels pressured to meet an hourly production quota set by her manager, even if the quota seems too hard to reach. In a personal video, Bessie talks about the pressures of high quotas that could put workers at risk.
I have worked at the Sodexo laundry on Collinwood Yards for about a year and make $8.60 per hour. I work the night shift cleaning the lint and medical waste as I get the plant ready for the morning shift. We all would benefit from living wages and safe working conditions in Cleveland. In my time at Sodexo, I have not felt that we have been properly trained or that our safety is important to Sodexo.
George Lang has been working with Sodexo laundry services in Pennsylvania for close to 11 years. George has had numerous concerns with the Pittsburgh facility. For example, he notes that "The place was in bad condition. There was bad equipment, people working with insufficient equipment to get the job done. There were major safety issues with leaking ceilings, busted up carts, understaffing, and maintenance issues."
Louis Marlon Jr. works at the Sodexo laundry plant in Buffalo, operating the conventional washers and dryers. Louis enjoys his job, but finds it hard to do it well with management standing over the workers and pushing them to work faster.
I work in the soil sort department of the Sodexo laundry on Collinwood Yards. I started working at the plant about one year ago. When I started I was making minimum wage, $7.50 an hour. Now I make $8.39 an hour, but it's still hard to make ends meet. I'm a Vietnam Veteran and get most of my health benefits provided to me by the VA, but I can't afford the health insurance from Sodexo to provide healthcare for my family.
Vance credits many of the opportunities he's had to the fact that his mother is part of union. So when the Sodexo food service workers at his college told him they were trying to form a union to win fair pay and health care, he wanted to help. Vance took the issue back to Concordia's Young Democrats. He made leaflets and distributed them on campus. According to Vance, that's when the trouble started.
